A stroke was the cause of death of MMA fighter Leandro “Feijão”, who was scheduled to perform this Friday (27) at the Shooto 43 event, according to his death certificate. The information was released by Leandro's aunt, Elma Caetano dos Santos, in an interview on the website of the “Combate” channel. Elma stated that the coroner raised the hypothesis that the athlete had a cardiovascular problem, but then denied the suspicion.
“What was told to me at the Botafogo UPA and the IML and what was even stated in the death certificate was that there was an accident hemorrhagic cerebrovascular accident. The bottom line says that there may have been a development of cardiovascular disease. But I, as a nurse and talking to the coroner afterwards, can say that what led to this change in pressure and the rupture in the brain was excessive exercise due to the weight he had to lose from one day to the next. The coroner asked if he had any illness, and I said no. Then he said it might have been the effort”, said Elma.
The fighter's aunt also spoke about her nephew's heavy training routine, who was in the final stages of his preparation for his fight against Gabriel Brasil. “Leandro slept at the gym from Wednesday to Thursday and must have spent the night exercising too much. Afterwards he went to the sauna and immersed himself in hot water. My family and I came to this conclusion. We know he doesn't have any problems. If he had any cardiovascular problems, he would never be training for this fight”, he concluded.
Leandro “Feijão” passed away last Thursday (26), moments before the Shooto 43 weigh-in. Upon being informed of Leandro's death, the event organizers promptly canceled the fight night and released a note on their page on Facebook regretting what happened. “Shooto Brasil hereby registers the cancellation of the event that would take place tomorrow (Friday) at Clube Hebraica, as a sign of MOURNING”, wrote Dedé Pederneiras, coach and one of the organizers of Shooto Brasil.
