It was sweaty, but Brazilian Gleison Tibau won his 28th MMA victory. The only Tupiniquim representative at UFC 164, an event that takes place this Saturday (31), in Milwaukee, fought a tough battle against Jamie Varner and left the octagon with the victory in the judges' split decision. The duel closed the preliminary card of the show, which will feature a lightweight belt dispute between Ben henderson e Anthony Pettis.
The fight
Faced with an opponent who specializes in stand-up fighting, Tibau had takedowns as his main weapon for victory. However, the North American started the fight with a lot of movement, making it difficult for the Brazilian to enter. After suffering tougher blows in his exchange, Gleison managed to take down his rival in the final minute and ended the round on top.
In the second half, the Brazilian was left. After getting a takedown in the first few moves, he passed guard, got to mount, worked with several punches and was close to getting a choke from Varner's back.
In the third round the fight turned around. When everything was heading towards a peaceful victory for the athlete from Rio Grande do Norte, the North American changed his tactics and surprised. Better at striking, this time it was the North American who took down Tibau. From below, the Brazilian suffered from some punches until the end of the fight.
When reading the judges' sheets, it was better for Tibau, who took the win in the judges' split decision (29×28, 27×29, 29×28).
