Bellator welterweight champion, Ben askren is one of the main names in the rival organization to the UFC. The American saw his contract expire on July 31st, when he knocked out Andrei Koreshkov in the fourth defense of his belt. Now, at the time of renewal, another path opens up for Askren.

President of Bellator, Bjorn Rebney told the North American ESPN website that he will not make an effort to keep the star on his squad. According to the director, Askren will have an easier path to signing with the UFC and one day fighting with Georges St Pierre.

“I don’t think we will make a proposal at this point, so I don’t see any reason to have a meeting. If Ben is going to the UFC, we must speed up the process so he can fight. I would love to see Ben against GSP. If the UFC makes an offer we will take a look and make a decision from there. We haven't been proactive yet. I only have good things to say about Ben as a fighter, but we are all aware of the way he fights and what he does – it’s not for everyone.”

Rebney refers to the style based on takedowns and positional control, with little defining power, of fighting practiced by Askren. The Bellator belt holder suffered a lot of criticism after spending six fights in a row winning by decision.
