After all, why leave the UFC?

For many, the UFC is the highest point a professional MMA fighter can reach in their career. Davi, however, ended up not enjoying all the 'glamour' that revolves around the company. In order to clarify the reasons that led to the breakup, the carioca did not shy away and explained his version of the case.

“Since my last fight, against Arman Tsarukyan (July 2020), my contract is over. We tried to renegotiate the contract, because I wanted to fight right away. I spoke to my managers, because, since I signed (with the UFC), it was very difficult to find a fighter to face me. Of course, given the jiu-jitsu background I come from, it ends up being a little more difficult. But I wanted to fight. I ended up having the fights a little further away. Sean Shelby himself (responsible for confirming the clashes in the company) said: 'I'm not going to cut him now. I prefer him to stay on the UFC roster doing tests and everything. I still intend to use it.' My manager said: 'Davi, either we wait, or we look for another event to fight in'. Do you prefer to fight in the Champions League or the Brazilian Championship? I prefer to fight in the Champions League. So, I said I would wait. (…) I told them that I don't fight for the money. UFC money won't make me rich, especially at the beginning. I have seven fights in the UFC. What will make me rich is getting to the belt and becoming champion”, explained the Brazilian.

Wait, wait, and nothing

After, together with his representatives, agreeing to continue as a UFC representative, Davi was once again disappointed. Even though he was willing to 'wear the company's shirt', the fighter revealed that opportunities remained scarce. The lack of opponents even led the Brazilian to try a new strategy, offering to work in other weight divisions.

“I was waiting, asking for a fight. Fights started falling and they tried to put fights on for me, within my category (lightweight). I said: 'if there's a fight, I'll show up at 77kg. (welterweight). I was going to fight at 77kg. and they said they had already found an athlete (substitute). I said: 'See if there's an 84kg one. (middleweight) that fell. I really fight this guy.' I needed to fight. I had already spent a year without fighting. Today, I am 35 years old. I have five more years of my career, at most. Today, I'm at my peak. I need to fight now. I don't have time to wait anymore. (…) They got in touch with Dana White, Sean Shelby and they all said they would put me up to fight and, on that, we never reached a common agreement. I was a seven-time world champion (in jiu-jitsu). I have my own name. I don't depend on anyone's name to get anywhere. I was, honestly, misused. It could be used much better”, he guaranteed.
