In an important confrontation for the middleweight (up to 83,9kg) of Ultimate, Jared Cannonier showed that patience is important within MMA. In the confrontation against Derek Brunson, held this Saturday (12), in Houston (USA), at UFC 271, the athlete did not have an easy life, but he showed calmness to deal with a clear disadvantage in the first round. An Ultimate veteran, Derek came close to winning in the first round, but ended up a victim of his own strength. After almost submitting his opponent, who was saved by the bell, the fighter got tired and ended up suffering a hard knockout.

The fight

In the opening seconds, Cannonier launched a low kick, but Brunson countered with a straight shot, which grazed his rival's face. Still in the first minute, Derek tried to shorten the match and attempted a takedown. Jared defended himself, but the veteran remained 'glued' to his opponent. With just over three minutes left in the stage, Derek managed to take down. Cannonier managed to 'explode' and stood up, moving away from his opponent. In the center of the octagon, the veteran went for the takedown again, but his opponent, this time, defended himself. Near the final minute, Brunson took his rival to the ground again, and looked for mount. From above, the veteran struck, while Jared tried to stop the duel. Again, Cannonier managed to get to his feet and attacked Derek with a straight high kick sequence. Jared got careless, felt an attack and went to the canvas. The veteran went forward, used a rear naked choke, but Cannonier ended up saved by the bell.

In the second round, Brunson quickly went for the legs and took down his opponent. Derek gained half guard and had plenty of time to develop his strategy. Jared pushed hard, got up and threw a cross, which rocked Brunson. The veteran recovered and exchanged blows with his opponent in the center of the octagon. With just over three minutes remaining before the end of the stage, Cannonier connected with a clean direct shot to his opponent's face. Dererk tried to feint attacks and tried to get in the legs, but Jared defended himself well. With a straight shot, Jared rocked the veteran again. As the confrontation progressed, Brunson showed signs of fatigue, but continued to walk forward. Noticing his opponent's 'gas', Jared began to grow in the confrontation and got the better of the exchange. In the final minute, Cannonier shook the veteran with a combination of punches and kicks, which made Brunson stagger around the octagon until he collapsed. Jared took advantage of the good moment, continued striking until the referee interrupted.
