Last Saturday (11), Charles do Bronx submitted Dustin Poirier in the main fight of UFC 269 and defended the lightweight title (under 70,3 kg) for the first time. The performance of the Brazilian, who withstood a difficult first round before turning the fight around and achieving victory in the third round, caught the attention of Justin gaethje, next challenger for the belt.

Justin gaethje, which on several occasions attacked Charles of the Bronx in interviews and on social media, calling the champion a “quitter”, he seems to have changed his opinion after the UFC 269. The two fighters spoke after the fight, in a meeting recorded by Ultimate, and the former interim champion showed respect to the current belt holder.

The same respect was noted in Gaethje's interview with ESPN after the event. The next title challenger praised Charles of the Bronx, but stated that he is eager to “break the champion’s face”.

“I absolutely loved it. I'm not going to disrespect Charles, he's now the champion and defended the belt and I can't wait to face him. I saw a competitor tonight, I saw a tough guy and I can't wait to break his face. He takes a lot of hits, so he better hope he can put me down and get the choke. If not, let's see what happens. “He just defended his title, I’m the one who has to build the fight. At the end of the day, it's me trying to knock him out versus him trying to take him to the ground. That's what we are. That's what he has been. That's who I am. Whether in Brazil, in America, preferably not in Abu Dhabi. I'm all in. I can’t wait,” Gaethje said.
