Recovering from a knee injury suffered in the victory over Ilir Latifi, in his UFC debut, the light heavyweight Gegard Mousasi has been constantly questioned about a return to middleweight, the category in which he won the DREAM belt five years ago.

The Armenian has already said that moving down a category will be the best option for his career in the UFC, saying that an opponent among the best in the middleweight division was enough for the change to occur. Now there is no more. In an interview with the MMA Fighting website, Mousasi said he would like to face Vitor belfort when you have recovered from the injury.

“It’s all about confrontations,” Mousasi said. “Let’s say they line up against someone like Vitor belfort, which is probably a challenger. This is the type of fight I want,” he added.

Belfort solidified his name as the main candidate to challenge the winner of Anderson Silva against Chris Weidman, a duel that will take place at UFC 162, after knocking out two members of the top 10 middleweights in a row. Using high kicks, Vitor won Michael Bisping in January, at the São Paulo event, and Luke Rockhold, at UFC in Jaraguá do Sul, last Saturday (18).

In his UFC debut, Mousasi was one pound below the light heavyweight limit, even without having to go through the weight cut process. For this reason, the decision to downgrade:

“To be honest, I believe the middleweight division will be much better for me. I will give my opponents fewer (physical) advantages. When I fought the last guy, Latifi, he cut over 20 pounds. He was much heavier. I think size doesn't mean much, but when we fight at the highest level, the guys are better, so I don't want to give any kind of advantage”, he concluded.
