With the victory over Darren till in the main fight of UFC Las Vegas 36, held last Saturday (04), Derek Brunson took an important step towards a possible fight for the middleweight belt (up to 83,9 kg). The opportunity, however, is not immediate, as the champion Israel adesanya must defend the division title in a rematch against Robert whittaker in early 2022.

In a press conference after the fight, Derek Brunson admitted waiting until March or April of next year for the opportunity to fight for the title, but joked about the possibility of facing Jake or Logan Paul and did not rule out a fight against Jared Cannonier, currently third in the middleweight rankings.
“I would make good use of a fight against Jake Paul or the brother if Dana White would release me to face them. Or maybe I can wait for the Whittaker-Israel (Adesanya) fight early next year and face the winner in March or April. We have some options. Cannonier is not completely ruled out, I’ve been asking for the toughest guys in the division,” said Brunson.
Derek Brunson he also claimed that he had asked to face Paulo borrachinha, but the Brazilian would not have signed the fight contract. The American expressed regret, stating that a victory over Borrachinha would put him in an even better position in the search for the title, but said he hopes to be rewarded for all the work done so far.
“I asked for Paulo borrachinha, the UFC sent the contract, but he didn't sign it. If I had had this fight, I would definitely be next for the belt. I'm doing all this work and I hope to be rewarded. I never had a chance for the belt in my career”, concluded the fighter.
