The last lightweight champion of the now defunct Strikeforce, Gilbert Melendez, adopted a politically incorrect speech when commenting on his confrontation with Ben henderson at UFC on FOX 7, next Saturday (20). In an interview with the website MMA Junkie, Melendez made a point of raising spirits for the fight, valid for the Ultimate lightweight title.
“I respect Benson. He's the No. 1 guy now. He is the UFC champion. But on the day of the fight, I will try to kill him. I have bad intentions, and it's personal. I don't need to be angry with anyone. I'm a professional, and I know how to turn my switch on and off when I need to. Some people call a month in advance. I call just in time (to fight). It's going to be fierce. It will be personal. That’s how I fight – I’m going to try to kill the guy”, said the challenger.
Gilbert Melendez has an impressive record of 21 wins and just 2 losses in more than a decade of career. In addition to Strikeforce, the organization for which he was the lightweight champion, the American also fought for PRIDE, Shooto, Rumble on the Rock and WEC.
His opponent, and holder of the UFC lightweight belt, Ben henderson, has a no less remarkable track record. There are 18 victories and only two defeats recorded by Bendo. In addition to the Ultimate title, the fighter was also WEC champion.
The fight between Ben henderson and Gilbert Melendez takes place next Saturday (20). at UFC on FOX 7. The event will take place at the HP Pavillion, in the city of San Jose, state of California (USA).
