The announcement of the rise of Jon Jones for the heavyweight category (up to 120,2 kg) generated a lot of expectation among MMA fans. However, almost a year has passed since the former light heavyweight champion (up to 93 kg) relinquished his title to transition divisions. And he doesn't appear to be in a rush to return to the Octagon.

“I know that many want (to see me at heavyweight), that's why I won't allow anyone to rush me. Becoming a heavyweight is a serious process. Not everyone understands what it takes to do this right. I will return when I am ready,” wrote the former light heavyweight champion.

Asked if the change in category would affect his endurance and speed, Jones spoke again about the importance of not skipping stages.

“It would undoubtedly hinder my endurance and speed if I tried to speed up the process. Excellence is not something that can be achieved overnight. It takes patience and consistency sometimes. Right now my main struggle is in the gym, on a daily basis. The achievements will come later”, explained Jones.

Jon Jones he gave up the UFC light heavyweight belt in August 2020. At the time, the American stated that he would only return to fight for the organization if he received better financial compensation and that he would love to return as a heavyweight in the future. The former champion's last appearance in the octagon took place in February 2020, when he defeated Dominick reyes by unanimous decision in the main fight of the UFC 247.
