UFC Hall of Famer Mark Coleman officially announces retirement

Former Ultimate heavyweight champion announced his official retirement from the sport on Facebook

Despite not fighting professionally since 2010, Mark Coleman only announced his official retirement this Wednesday (06). The news was given by the 48-year-old athlete himself, through his Facebook profile. “The Hammer (his nickname) has stopped fighting,” he posted. “I appreciate what has already been done. Now I just wait for prayers”, he added.

Coleman won two tournaments in the first editions of Ultimate and was the organization's first heavyweight champion, after beating Dan Severn at UFC 12 in 1997. Furthermore, he was champion of the PRIDE Open Weight tournament in 2000 and participated in the first fight between members of the Ultimate Hall of Fame, coincidentally his last fight, against Randy Couture, at UFC 109, on February 6, 2010.

In his almost 14-year career as a professional MMA fighter, Mark Coleman had six fights against five Brazilian opponents. Won Ricardo arona and Allan Goés and was defeated by Pedro Rizzo and Rodrigo Minotauro. Furthermore, there is a separate episode involving Mauritius Shogun. At PRIDE, victory for “The Hammer”, after the Brazilian broke his arm during a fall. Three years later, the Curitiba native knocked out Coleman, in the veteran's UFC debut.
