One of the main candidates to challenge Kamaru Usman for the welterweight belt (up to 77kg.), Colby covington criticized Conor McGregor for suggesting that he wants to jump the queue and fight for the division title in the future. “Conor is clearly trying to exaggerate to get into the headlines. What it is. The guy just got knocked out by Dustin 'Sorry-ier'. Are you serious? Do you want a chance at the 77kg title? Are you taking a beating in the lightweight division and want to fight at welterweight? He won't do that. It’s not going to move up a category,” said Covington.

In his career in MMA, McGregor has already ventured into welterweight on three occasions. After being knocked out José Aldo and won the featherweight belt (up to 65,7kg.), the Irishman moved up two categories to face Nate diaz in two fights – with one victory for each. In January 2020, he also defeated Donald Cerrone. Still, Covington says that Conor just wants 'attention' and says that the athlete is done for the sport.

“He’s just doing this to get attention and make headlines. Honestly, he's a joke. He's a laughing stock in the MMA community. He made all that money from his whiskey and fighting Mayweather. He has no motivation. Nothing makes him wake up early in the morning to go fight. He tries to say it's for his kids, but man, the guy is done. He has nothing left in the tank”, concluded the American.
