The cut of 15 UFC fighters, last Wednesday (20), caused surprise among everyone who follows the sport. But the mass dismissal also created a very unusual situation among one of those dismissed. As soon as the list of fired athletes was released, flyweight Ulysses Gomez used Twitter to ask North American reporter, Ariel Helwani, if the information was correct.
“Helwani, am I fired? What! Seriously”, wrote the fighter on the microblog. Soon after, as soon as his manager confirmed the news, Gomez returned to the microblog to say that he will do his best to return to the UFC.
“My manager confirmed that I was released. I thank the UFC for everything it did for me. Fighting in the octagon is a dream I've had since I was 15, but I'll be back soon”, wrote the American.
Despite the apparent surprise with the cut, Ulysses Gomez's trajectory was not good. The fighter, who has a professional record of nine wins and four losses, appeared twice in Ultimate and was defeated both times. At UFC on FOX 4 he was knocked out by John Moraga, while at UFC on FUEL 7, held last Saturday (16), he ended up being defeated by Phil Harris in a unanimous decision by the judges.
