Current number three in the ranking of the group led by Kamaru Usman, Edwards had not performed since July 2019. Initially, the Englishman would exchange forces against Khamzat Shimaev, but the Swede left the event due to the consequences of Covid-19.

In order not to waste the preparation period, Leon agreed to face Muhammad, who is ranked 13th. In the confrontation, however, there was no balance in the opening five minutes, when Edwards was left against his rival.
