Júnior Cigano: “It’s a rematch for Velasquez, for me it’s just another fight”

Quiet and safe. This is how  junior gypsy can be set before fighting Cain Velazquez, his second UFC belt defense. The Brazilian, who won the category title by knocking out the American of Mexican descent in December 2011, does not take the rematch as a special fight.

For him, the duel against Velasquez is just another fight, while his opponent needs to seek victory to regain the throne of the category.

“I think it's a rematch for Cain, for me it's another fight. Every time I fight I prepare for the most difficult one. So I'm 100% to go there and keep my title. It's much better to defend the belt than to be the challenger. I want to continue with the title, now I certainly have a better life and I can provide that for my family too. I like how it is and I want it to stay that way”, said Cigano at the last press conference to promote the duel, held this Thursday (27).

In the first meeting between Cigano and Velasquez, the Brazilian won by knockout just over a minute into the fight, but for next Saturday's rematch (29), the Tupiniquim athlete expects a more competitive duel.

“I think it will be longer than the first. Cain came very well prepared and this category is dangerous. Cain has a lot of stamina, he is a great wrestler, he has very dangerous ground and pound (overhand punches in ground fighting) and he has good striking,” he said. “He is one of the best in the category and that motivates me, because I always want to fight with the best”, added the champion.

One response to “Júnior Cigano: “It’s a rematch for Velasquez, for me it’s just another fight””

  1. The “unrecognizable” Junior Cigano was “surprised by Velasquez. Commentators from Brazil said “they couldn’t believe what they were seeing”. “Irrecognizable Junior Cigano” is the jingoism of Brazilian fans [always jingoistic, by the way]. Junior Cigano discovered how he works less efficiently after taking a bit of a beating, that's all. Cain Velasquez is SO MUCH MORE COMPLETE a fighter than Junior Cigano, that I always thought it was absurd that they underestimated the boy so much. He only showed the distance between tactical and technical resources that separate him from his opponent. Junior is just stronger. Point. Cain is more of a fighter.

But the prevailing jingoism in the country of “yay-yay” and “already-won” has difficulty recognizing the obvious. Cain is a strategist, a fighter with a much smaller physical size than most and with an efficiency index to be placed on a graph and analyzed.

Let’s stop “hooray”. We can't even do that in football anymore... Barcelona beats any team that sets up in this country. Even Mexico wins sometimes…

Brazilians are a people whose “boastful pride” in relation to their athletes borders on delirium. Television commentators then seem to lose all critical analysis and impartiality of the situation. Junior Cigano beat Cain Velasquez, who had been out for a year, due to a serious shoulder injury. THAT FIGHT WAS ATYPICAL, IT'S NOT LIKE NOW. Why don't they emphasize that? They will never stress. Cain Velasquez will not keep the title “just for one fight”. Their effectiveness rates [for the category]: number of takedowns applied, number of punches applied per time, success in the blows thrown, etc., etc., are far above the average of EVERYONE ELSE. Including Junior dos Santos.
