Vitor belfort was the target of criticism on social media after a publication praising Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro (no party). Even though he lives in the United States, the 'Phenomenon' does not hide his admiration for the Brazilian head of state. However, this support was not well accepted by his followers.

“While the left is looking for ways to decriminalize pedophilia, transforming it into a mere disease or sexual option, I presented a PL (Bill) that increases the penalty for these crimes by 50%”, shared Vitor, reproducing a text published by Bolsonaro.
With 1,2 million followers on Instagram, Vitor's action was not well accepted by a large portion of his fans in the comments. Some internet users questioned the fact that the athlete supported the president, but lived in another country with his family.
“Living abroad, he didn’t even have the courage to come and vote in the last election,” wrote a follower.
Another fan supported his text based on criticism that Bolsonaro has received regarding the way the president has handled the coronavirus pandemic situation in Brazil. Jair, who recently tested positive for COVID-19, even downplayed the disease that has killed more than 550 people worldwide, according to the World Health Organization.
“You support a president who doesn’t care about human life. If you are so satisfied with your own government, why don’t you live in Brazil?” asked the internet user.
In this specific case, Vitor responded to the fan, justifying his position.
“When you support someone's governance, it doesn't mean you agree with everything. I will never expect anyone to be perfect. I hope we have politicians who don't steal and who understand that politics is not something we inherit, but rather how we do it”, replied the fighter.
With many messages opposing Belfort's publication, there were also people who expressed their support for the fighter. Some fans took the opportunity to praise the athlete.
“Congratulations on speaking out. We are in this fight together”, replied a follower.
It is important to inform that PL 236/2012, defended by Belfort and Bolsonaro, does not decriminalize pedophilia, as stated by the head of state and the fighter agrees. The Project, which has been in progress in the Senate since 2012, proposes a new Penal Code, which establishes a reduction from 14 to 12 years of the age limit for victims of crimes of 'rape of a vulnerable person'.
