After he defeated Cruz and reached the most desired place in the division, Cody was unable to maintain his condition for long. The North American ended up defeated in his first title defense, when he faced his former teammate, TJ Dillashaw, in 2017, and was beaten again by his rival in the rematch, in 2018. Afterwards, Garbrandt ended up defeated by Peter Munhoz, last year, confirming the third consecutive defeat.

Far from the best phase that took him to the top of the world, the former champion explained that the bad moment was due to mistakes made in the last performances. Now, the fighter is more confident than ever that he can, in fact, return to the radar for a future title fight.

“I don’t need to reinvent the wheel. (…) When I'm on, no one can beat me. I truly believe I have corrected most of my mistakes. When I'm at peace with myself, I can cause chaos inside the octagon, because I know my life is good, in order and I can leave all the savagery in the octagon. I’m prepared to do that,” he said.

Even though he lost in his last three commitments for the organization, the North American guarantees that he still remains in MMA due to the spirit of competition. Ready for the challenge this weekend, Garbrandt said he is motivated to face Assunção.

PUBLICITY:

“I’m obsessed with sport, with improving, with winning. Losing is part of it. It challenges you to grow”, he concluded.
