Barão and the chance for the interim belt
Originally, Urijah faber was scheduled to face another opponent: his rival and bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz. However, a serious knee injury kept Cruz, current holder of the belt, out of the fight. Due to the uncertainty of the champion's return period, the organization chose to open the option of an interim title. Barão was chosen to compete for the new belt.

Barão, however, did not “parachute” into the title fight. With an impressive streak of 29 fights without losing, the Brazilian, who still hasn't gotten used to the enormous harassment for taking on the main fight of the show, prefers to let his actions – and blows – speak louder

“He who has a mouth says what he wants. I’m prepared for Saturday, and he’s going to have to show that he’s going to beat me,” he declared. “I'm calm. I have been working for several years and training hard to have my work recognized. I’m very happy for the opportunity to compete for this belt”, added the Brazilian.

In turn, the “California Kid”, as Faber is known, has an extensive record of 26 victories against just five defeats, Barão's good record does not impress him.

“He has a good record and is obviously very talented, but I have been fighting at a different level,” said Faber. “He has this incredible track record, but I faced and defeated better guys than him. A lot of people seem intimidated by him, but I'm not. He has skills and he loves to fight, but none of that worries me. I'll take you to deep waters. In one round, he will see the difference between me and the rest of the guys he faced”, concluded the American.
