With an extremely fair takedown game and making exemplary use of superior positions on the ground, the champion of the reality show The Ultimate Fighter 15 secured the biggest victory of his career and, as a bonus, in the post-fight interview he asked for a duel against former interim welterweight champion Colby Colvington. For Rafael dos Anjos, the loss marked his thirteenth setback in 42 professional fights.

The fight

The duel started with a lot of study and the Rafael dos Anjos remaining in the center of the octagon. Rafael managed to shorten well and attacked the North American's waistline, however, he ended up surprised by the counterattack and ended up on the fence, with Chiesa trying to go for his back. Maverick managed to take the fight to the ground and, with the “padlock” closed on the Brazilian's waistline, he attacked the neck region, seeking a submission via rear-naked choke. However, Dos Anjos defended himself well and managed to return to half guard, before returning to his feet. Rafael even tried a kick to the waistline, but ended up being taken down again before the end of the first round.

The second round began with Chiesa again attempting takedowns, but this time, Rafael dos Anjos managed to deny the North American's attack and, with a counter blow, achieved a good knockdown. In Chiesa's second attempt, however, Rafael ended up with his back on the ground once again. Back on his feet, Chiesa started to show signs of fatigue, which was promptly exploited by Dos Anjos with a good sequence of low kicks. Feeling the pressure to balance the count in the partial, Maverick once again went for the Brazilian's legs and got his second takedown of the round and with just a few seconds on the clock he only controlled the final moments.

The third round began once again with Michael chiesa seeking, and achieving, the fall. On top, the North American this time took the Brazilian away from the area close to the cage, thus reducing the chances of his opponent reacting. Chiesa then went for an armbar, but without success, the two ended up in 50/50 guard. Maverick then returned to Rafael's guard and, with just over a minute remaining until the end of the fight and the advantage already gained by then, he only did enough so that the standing position was not reestablished before the final bell.

After 15 minutes, the jurors declare Michael chiesa winner in unanimous decision, with two of them scoring 29×28 and one 30×27 in favor of the North American.

Dos Anjos should go back to lightweight, he can't handle welterweight.
