Edgar is coming off a recent defeat in a fight for the featherweight title, when he was defeated by Max Holloway in the main fight of UFC 240 in June. On that occasion, Frankie ended up being dominated for five rounds by his opponent and suffered yet another failure in his attempt to become champion of the category. The athlete had been beaten on two occasions when José Aldo he still appeared as champion.

Initially against Ortega, Sung would try to increase his number of victories and get closer to the division's elite, so that he could become a possible title challenger soon. With the addition of Edgar, 'Zumbi' will also be able to move up in the category, as the North American has not yet been removed from the official ranking and currently occupies fifth place.
