Cormier says he is ready for a rematch with Miocic, but agrees to wait: 'The champion dictates the rules'

The North American reveals his desire to carry out a trilogy against his compatriot as soon as possible, however, he believes that the duel will take place in the middle of 2020

Since losing his position as heavyweight champion (up to 120,2kg), Daniel Cormier has been living in anticipation about when Ultimate will confirm the trilogy between him and his newest rival, Stipe Miocic. However, the current champion has shown interest in holding a superfight against Tyson Fury, a global boxing star. Knowing this, 'DC' stated that he intends to wait until his opponent decides to accept the challenge and start the training period. Daniel spoke about the subject in an interview with 'MMA Junkie'.

“There are no vacancies for us to fight until June, perhaps. The way the Ultimate schedule looks so far, with them announcing Tony (Ferguson) and Khabib (Nurmagomedov) for April, there really isn't time. We’re going to have to wait a little,” said Cormier.

Before deciding that he would like to face Miocic again, DC experienced a major dilemma in his professional life. For years, the fighter stated that he would not be seen performing after the age of 40, however, the athlete ended up breaking his promise and, with the spirit of competition taking over, decided to try to regain his belt in one last performance.

When he took the title from Stipe in 2018, Cormier, instead of giving his compatriot an immediate rematch, insistently sought a superfight against the former champion and WWE (wrestling) star, Brock Lesnar. The fight never happened due to difficulties in accepting Lesnar's values.

In the meantime, Daniel ended up defending his title, when he agreed to exchange forces against the giant Derrick Lewis. At the time, Cormier had no difficulty putting his excellent wrestling on the line and completely dominating his rival. Nine months later, the rematch against Miocic finally took place, and 'DC' ended up succumbing to his rival's boxing.

As a challenger, Daniel understands that it is Stipe's turn to seek the best for his career. The fighter, then, claims to understand that his compatriot is the one who will define when the best moment for the duel to take place.

“I'm ready to fight, but he's the champion. As champion, he makes the rules. I'm waiting for him to say when he wants to fight. When he decides, I will be prepared, more than last time”, concluded Daniel.
