When he beat Poirier in the UFC 242, Nurmagomedov, in a press conference after the event, made a point of stating that, before talking about a possible date to put on the Ultimate gloves again, he needed some time to rest. Even without being sure when he would return to action, both the Russian and the company's president, Dana White, admitted that the 'Eagle's' next opponent will, in fact, be Ferguson, if the athlete is fit.

Poirier's interest in facing 'El Cucuy' is based on his desire to return as a challenger as soon as possible. After losing to Khabib, the fighter did not hide his frustration at the defeat, as, according to the American, he was very prepared for the duel. A win over Ferguson could put Dustin back in 'next on the list' status to face Nurmagomedov.

Even with Tony and Poirier maintaining their dream of holding the category's linear belt, another athlete could complicate the situation for the first two. Nurmagomedov has already publicly stated his desire to have a super fight against Georges St-Pierre, former welterweight (up to 77kg) and middleweight (up to 83,9kg) champion. The UFC also showed interest and the parties intend to try to negotiate. If the match gets off the ground, title plans for Tony and Dustin may have to wait.
