After the serious injury suffered by Conor McGregor at UFC 329 , held last Saturday (11), in Las Vegas (USA), Colby Covington came to the defense of the Irish star and harshly criticized Dustin Poirier for the provocations made to his former rival. In an interview with the American website MMA Fighting, the former challenger for the welterweight belt (up to 77kg) classified the former interim lightweight champion as a "fraud" and stated that 'Notorious' was one of those responsible for the growth of his rival's career.

Known for his provocative style, the outspoken fighter stated that he does not intend to attack McGregor at a delicate moment, highlighting the Irishman's legacy in MMA. According to the (US) athlete, the former two-division UFC champion deserves respect for everything he has achieved inside and outside the octagon.

“McGregor is still a future Hall of Famer and the biggest star the sport has ever seen, so I’m not going to kick him when he’s already down. I’m not going to be like that fraud Dustin Poirier , that swamp trash from Louisiana,” Covington fired back.

Subsequently, 'Chaos' went further and stated that McGregor played an important role in Poirier's career, even citing advice that, according to him, the Irishman gave his rival at the time the fighter was arrested for public drunkenness.

“I’m not going to kick him when he’s already on the ground, especially a guy who built Dustin’s career. He was giving Dustin great advice. He said, ‘Man, control this, otherwise your life will completely spiral out of control’,” the American added.

The statements come days after Dustin Poirier mocked McGregor's defeat and injury, reigniting the rivalry between the two former opponents. While the Irishman prepares to undergo knee surgery and begin a long recovery period, criticism from old rivals continued throughout the week.

Colby Covington 's criticism of Poirier didn't begin after McGregor's injury. When the former interim lightweight champion was arrested for public intoxication in Louisiana, the American used the episode to attack his rival on social media and question his image as a family man.

“I’ve been telling you exactly who Poirier is off-camera for years! Now, finally, you’ll all see how he earned the nickname ‘Louisiana Swamp Trash.’ I will accept all your apologies. Nothing demonstrates the character of a family man and a role model better than being arrested for public intoxication at age 37, at 18:38 p.m. on Father’s Day,” Covington wrote on his X account (formerly Twitter).
