Acting as an interpreter for the athlete, Merab reported that he only tapped out three times in the last second of the fight because he thought it was over. In his version, Gafurov denied being in danger and pointed out that he only touched Wikłacz because he imagined that Wikłacz had grabbed the guillotine choke after the buzzer sounded.

Aware of his friend's skill, Merab accepted this version of events and highlighted his efficiency in defending against submission attempts, implying that he was ultimately harmed by the misunderstanding. However, despite Gafurov's lament and protest, footage of the incident from different angles showed that he gave up the duel at the last second, not after it had ended.

"From what I understand, he first said, 'Good,' and then, when he heard the horn, he tapped. It's a shame. Congratulations to Wikłacz. I have nothing against him. He's a good fighter, but it was my brother Gafurov who told me this. He never tapped out by a choke. It's a shame," said the former UFC champion on his official Instagram account.

"I just want to show you what happened. I hope you enjoyed the fight. My brother will be back," he concluded.
