The first Brazilian representative to perform at UFC Vegas 111, Denise Gomes dominated Tecia Pennington for 15 minutes and came away with a unanimous decision victory on Saturday night (8), in a fight valid for the strawweight division (up to 52,1 kg). With the result, the Rio Grande do Sul native reached her fourth consecutive victory in the company and, as a bonus, was also awarded a black belt in Jiu-Jitsu right after the fight.

The two athletes spent the first moments of the duel studying each other. While Denise dominated the center of the octagon and landed strong blows, Tecia adopted a more evasive posture and used a lot of movement to avoid risks. The Brazilian was initially successful in taking down her opponent and connecting with some punches on the American. She repeated the action a few seconds later and from then on began to corner her opponent against the cage. In this context, Pennington used kicks to maintain distance and repel Gomes' approach. She attempted a takedown at the end of the round, but ended up being countered with a kimura.
The pace remained similar in the second part of the fight. Increasingly comfortable, Denise began to switch stances and confuse her opponent with kicks to the midsection and powerful punches to the head. The Brazilian also began to attempt riskier strikes, such as spinning kicks that came close to hitting the American's head. The veteran had a brief success by landing short punches in the clinch during the final part of the round.
Physically stronger, Denise began using the clinch against the cage at the start of the third round. In a moment of carelessness, she ended up being thrown to the ground with a good hip takedown from Pennington, but the position was quickly reversed and the Brazilian managed to take her opponent's back, secure the takedown, and control the veteran until the end of the fight without taking any major risks.

Daniel Marcos recovered from his loss to Montel Jackson in May and defeated Miles Johns with a well-deserved rear-naked choke in the second fight of the night, valid for the bantamweight category (up to 61,2 kg). The Peruvian reached a record of 18 wins and only one loss as a professional, while the American suffered his third consecutive defeat and is now threatened with dismissal.
The athletes were restrained by Ultimate security even before the fight began. While Marcos was being announced, the two ended up facing off in the center of the octagon in a tense moment. However, the mood was quite different when the fight actually started.
Both adopted fairly conservative strategies in the early stages of the fight. Although they attacked with fervor when the clash unfolded standing up, they spent most of the time exchanging blows against the cage.
After hearing from his corner that he would likely have lost the first round, the Peruvian returned with a much more aggressive stance for the second round. And the result was the best possible. He landed good strikes on his opponent, took the fight to the ground, managed to transition to his opponent's back and locked in a rear-naked choke. Johns refused to tap and ended up unconscious at four minutes and 33 seconds of the second round.

In the first fight of the night, Zachary Reese defeated Jackson McVey with a rear-naked choke in the second round, in a catchweight bout of 88,4 kg. With the result, the American reached his third consecutive fight without a loss, in addition to achieving his fourth victory in the world's largest MMA organization. In contrast, his compatriot suffered his second consecutive defeat and still doesn't know what it's like to win in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
The pace of the fight was intense from the start. McVey went on the offensive from the first seconds of the fight. Taking advantage of the octagon's smaller-than-usual dimensions, he trapped Reese in a Muay Thai clinch and landed good knee strikes to the midsection and elbow strikes to the head, opening a cut above his opponent's eyebrow and putting the fight at risk of being stopped.
Reese also showed aggression by landing combinations of punches to the body and taking his opponent down on more than one occasion in the first two rounds. In one of those moments, he managed to transition to his opponent's back and lock in a rear-naked choke, forcing McVey to tap out when the clock showed one minute and 38 seconds of the second round.
