Alexandre Pantoja comments on the possibility of facing Merab Dvalishvili in a UFC superfight

Flyweight champion praises Georgian, but rules out changing categories and reinforces focus on his own division

Apparently, the reign of Alexandre pantoja in the UFC flyweight division (up to 56,7 kg) is still far from over. The Brazilian finished Kai Kara France and defended the belt with authority in the UFC 317, extending his undefeated streak to five victories in title fights in the category. Given his dominance, some fans and experts are already considering the possibility of seeing him in search of a double championship, challenging Merab Dvalishvili in bantamweight (up to 61,2 kg). However, the Rio native already has a well-defined position on this scenario.

In a press conference after the UFC 317, Alexandre pantoja praised Merab Dvalishvili, highlighting the Georgian's courage, good heart and strength of spirit. In the Brazilian's opinion, Merab is one of the best fighters of the moment and deserves to fight for the bantamweight belt (up to 61,2 kg). Despite the recognition of his rival in the division above, Pantoja made it clear that he has no intention of moving up a weight class and reaffirmed his commitment to the flyweight division.

“Merab is an incredible guy, you know. He’s small, but he’s a huge guy, you know? His heart, his spirit, it’s something beautiful. One of the best. He’s got a good heart. He deserves that belt. And I have my division, man. I’m the flyweight champion, you know? Why would I even think about moving up to bantamweight? I don’t think about that,” said the flyweight champion.

Determining his absolute focus on the flyweight division, Pantoja stated that he does not consider giving up the belt and that any change in category would only happen if he were defeated inside the octagon. The champion highlighted his daily dedication to training and said he still has a lot to achieve in the organization, guaranteeing that he intends to hold the title for a long time.

Alexandre Pantoja now has a new challenger in the flyweight division

With an aggressive fighting style and sharp jiu-jitsu, Alexandre pantoja dominated Kai Kara France for two rounds until he achieved the submission with a rear naked choke in the third. The Brazilian added another belt defense to his career and achieved the 30th victory in his professional record, with only five defeats.

Soon after having his arm raised, Pantoja was challenged by Joshua Van, who had won Brandon royval in the previous fight of the event. The champion accepted the Burmese's challenge, and the two ended up facing off inside the octagon.
