Retired from MMA, Jon Jones had a troubled exit after failing to reach an agreement with the UFC to face Tom aspinall for the unification of heavyweight titles (up to 120,2 kg). In addition to having broken the expectations of his fans, 'Bones' did not have a dignified 'exit' and his departure was announced by Dana White, during a press conference at an event in Baku.
While Dana constantly stated that the fight would happen at some point, Jones remained silent, while Aspinall demanded a position from both parties. After a long wait, White then suddenly decided to officially retire the sports legend, indicating that the decision was made by his compatriot.

However, on Friday afternoon (27), the former champion ended up coming out publicly to detail his departure from the company and did not hesitate to respond to what was said by the president. According to the veteran, the fight was never officially closed as Dana White indicated.

“If the fight was a done deal, trust me, I would have been fighting. We started negotiating at some point, yes, but it was never a done deal. My job at that point was to sit back, be quiet and that’s exactly what I did. I was enjoying my life, that should be obvious to you guys. I’ve been told 1000 times just to reconsider and give it more time. That’s the truth,” Jones said on his official X account.
At 37 years old, Jones had his last fight in November 2024, when he defended his belt against Stipe Miocic. Since then, the athlete has imposed conditions for accepting a duel against Aspinall, but he did not confirm that he would face the Englishman during negotiations with the agents.
