“I think it’s a very even fight. I think Topuria is the favorite and I’m leaning towards him, but that’s the point where everyone gets caught out. People think Topuria is just boxing, they get really worried about that and then suddenly he throws the leg kick. (Alexander) Volkanovski and (Max) Holloway, it wasn’t the boxing, it was the leg kicks that made the difference. But Charles has a great defense against leg kicks, it’s very difficult to kick him.”

“If Charles does a good job blocking the leg kicks, he has great knees, clinch, jiu-jitsu, everything… it will be a very difficult fight for Ilia, it will not be like the other fights where he just ran through people. It will be one of the best fights in the lightweight division.”

Following his statement, Dariush put himself in the position of the Brazilian's coach and revealed what he would advise Charles to do to try to make it harder for his rival to win.

“If I were Charles’ coach, I would tell him that he needs to constantly fake his knees and kick as well. Don’t allow Topuria to get close to him by fakeing. What I mean by that is that he (Topuria) gets low and high and when you let him get low, the power comes on top. If you can stop that movement by threatening with knees and kicks, that in itself will make things difficult for Topuria.”

“He has good boxing, don’t get me wrong. He uses his shoulders and goes up and down, but if you stop that, you stop a lot of the offensive action. He’s not one of the fastest, he has a way of sucking you in at his own pace and allowing him to throw his punches. If Charles interferes with that timing, that’s the key to victory (…) and of course, when you have the chance, use your takedowns, Charles is very good with takedowns, he has very good explosiveness and he doesn’t have to be intimidated by that just because Ilia is a grappling fighter too,” he concluded.
