Khalil Rountree, Alex Poatan's last UFC victim, learned valuable lessons from his loss to the Brazilian in a light heavyweight (up to 93 kg) title fight last October. Now, the American intends to use those lessons in his return to the octagon against compatriot and former champion Jamahal Hill at UFC Baku in Azerbaijan on June 21.

In a video recently published on his official YouTube channel, 'War Horse' commented on the importance of the defeat to Alex Poatan in his career.

“I think one of the most important things for Alex after the fight was to continue to progress. After talking to my wife and looking at the video, I thought, what could I have done better? Even though I had a great camp and did my best, I always try to think that there is room for improvement. Among a few things, I felt like I could have improved my physical strength. I think I could have had a whole extra ear in my corner to point out moments where my opponent was hurt and I could have capitalized on them. I think a little more support. After the fight I immediately went after that,” he reflected.

Another point of evolution noted by Rountree was in relation to grappling, not specifically for the duel against Hill, a stand-up specialist, but rather thinking about the long-term future within the elite of the light heavyweight division.

“Another thing I wanted to improve was my grappling. The higher I climb the rankings and the closer I get to becoming champion, I know there are guys coming after me for the belt. I want to become a complete fighter. I want to be the best version of myself that I can be, in all areas,” he concluded.

Khalil Rountree Jr. and Jamahal Hill will headline UFC Baku, the organization's first event in Azerbaijan, on June 21.
