In preparation for his final walk to the octagon, Dustin poirier opened the game and revealed that at first, Max Holloway was not his ideal option for a farewell fight. Despite being scheduled to face the Hawaiian for the third time, at UFC 318, on July 19, the 'Diamond' as he is known, stated that UFC denied his wish.
“I was asking Hunter Campbell for the Justin gaethje because we are tied (1-1), I really wanted this trilogy. For some reason they really wanted this fight (against Max Holloway). It's okay because I respect Max for my last fight. When Ilia Topuria I said I was going to go to 70kg, I messaged the UFC and said: 'hey, let me see what's going on with this guy'. But they were never interested in it, they said it wasn't going to happen and that they wanted Max”, revealed Poirier to MMAJunkie.
