For at least two days, a rumor has been circulating involving a fight between Alex Poatán e Magomed Ankalayev has been gaining traction in the MMA community on social media. The former Ultimate light heavyweight champion (up to 93kg) would have entered the fight against the Russian in UFC 313, which happened a week ago, with a broken left hand. The Brazilian lost the duel by unanimous decision of the judges and the belt ended up in the hands of the fighter from the Republic of Dagestan.

Alex Poatán is known for his devastating left hook, which surprises and punishes all his opponents. However, this 'deadly weapon' was not used against Ankalaev in UFC 313, which raised suspicions among fans. According to the American channel specializing in fighting 'MMA Fighting Universe', the alleged injury was highlighted in a specific photo, where the Brazilian is next to his coach, Plínio Cruz. Fans also reported that, in addition to his broken hand, Poatan was suffering from an intestinal infection when he entered the octagon against Ankalaev. The channel also leaves a poll: 'Do we believe it or is it just another excuse?'

Soon, many internet users began to react to the theory. Some came to Poatan's defense, saying that the former champion does not usually make excuses when he suffers defeats. Others reinforced the Brazilian's honor, saying that he only comments on injuries when he wins. Some highlighted the credibility of the channel, saying that if it was reported, it was probably someone from Poatan's team who leaked the information.

Despite the theory, neither Poatan nor Plímio Cruz have confirmed the information so far. The coach also ruled out any justification for performance in the UFC 313, in addition to reinforcing that the preparation was impeccable and that the fighter entered the octagon in ideal physical and mental conditions.

“Life is made of ups and downs, and those ups and downs are what make us who we are on this journey towards our goal. We will come back stronger, we will regroup as a team. The vibe was great this week, we have no excuses. Poatan was good, and I think he won the fight. This is a stumble, not a fall, and it will only make him stronger, our team stronger. Humans evolve more in times of adversity,” he concluded.

Poatan x Ankalaev set up rematch

Poatan, who had previously maintained an undefeated record in the 93 kg category, was defeated by unanimous decision after five even rounds. Ankalaev's victory ended the Brazilian's five-fight winning streak in the UFC and secured the Russian his first career title in the organization.

The UFC is expected to schedule the rematch in 2025, taking advantage of the commercial interest of the duel. Ankalaev, who now holds the belt, has already signaled his willingness to face the Brazilian again, in a likely confrontation in Abu Dhabi.
