Old rival of Conor McGregor, Dustin poirier left personal feelings aside when addressing the situation of the Irishman, who in 2025 could complete four years away from the octagon. For Diamante, who faced the biggest star in the history of MMA on three occasions, his rival has the physical and psychological capabilities to get in shape and return to the Ultimate successfully.

“I would love to talk trash about Conor, but if anyone can pull it together and come back, it’s this guy. If he can find that passion and that fire and put it together. I’m not saying anyone can, but this guy can. He’s special. He has something special, but only he knows when he looks in the mirror if he can really do it again. But if he believes, I believe he can,” the fighter said in an interview with Espaitec's 'Outta Pocket' last Wednesday (26).

Poirier was McGregor's last opponent. They faced each other for the third time in UFC 264, in July 2021. The fight would be the conclusion of the rivalry between the two, whose first chapter took place in 2014, still in the featherweight category (up to 65,7 kg). However, the Irishman fractured his left leg at the end of the first round, and since then he has not been able to compete in the sport again.

Citing his own example, Poirier said that experiencing difficult times ends up being a fuel and source of motivation for his journey in MMA.
“I love it when the chips are down. I love it when I’m the underdog (and) my back is against the wall. I would use that as motivation and just keep going. I would anchor on that and enjoy it. Every day in the gym: sweating, bleeding and thinking I’m going to show everyone who I really am. Coming back from a broken leg, coming back from a couple of losses, everyone is writing me off. That would be my motivation because I love that stuff. I’ve never lost two fights in a row in my career because of that,” he concluded.
McGregor would return against Michael Chandler

McGregor's return appeared to be close in 2024. The first two-time champion in Ultimate history was married to face Michael chandler No. UFC 303, after the two participated as coaches on the 31st season of The Ultimate Fighter. However, he fractured the little toe on his left foot two weeks before the fight and the bout was canceled. So far, there are no predictions or rumors of a new date for his return to the most famous octagon in the world.
Poirier, who recently turned 36, has publicly stated on several occasions that he wants to retire this year. In fact, the Diamond's last fight is expected to take place in the middle of the year, at an event in New Orleans, the capital of the state of Louisiana, where he was born and began his career more than a decade ago.
