Previously separated by one of the most intense rivalries in MMA, Israel adesanya e Alex Poatán surprised the world by turning tension into friendship. During the UFC 312, held in Sydney last Saturday (8), the two not only buried old feuds, but also made plans for the future. Amid conversations and confidences, the Nigerian revealed a desire to go to Brazil again, with the right to revisit Carnival and immerse himself in indigenous cultures.

Adesanya, who faced Poatan in kickboxing in São Paulo in 2017, recalled with enthusiasm the country's festive atmosphere. The dialogue took place during the UFC 312, event in which Dricus Du Plessis kept the middleweight belt (up to 83,9 kg) against Sean Strickland.

“When we fought in São Paulo, it was Carnival. There were asses everywhere. I remember leaving the event and going up to a high place, where we had an incredible barbecue,” said the fighter.

Now, with the rivalry transformed into mutual respect, the Nigerian's interest turns to Poatan's indigenous roots. "I want to go to the tribes," he said, referring to the Pataxós of Aldeia Coroa Vermelha, in Bahia — a community that the Brazilian frequents and pays homage to with body painting and cultural symbols in his fights.

Alex Poatan and indigenous ancestry

Alex's connection with indigenous peoples is an intrinsic part of his identity. Named 'Poatan' ('strong hand' in Tupi-Guarani) by his first coach, the champion has tattoos and adornments on his body that celebrate his indigenous ancestry.

In 2023, he visited the Pataxó tribe and promised to take the UFC belt to the village — a gesture he repeated after winning Jamahal hill No. UFC 300. For Adesanya, the proposal to accompany Brazilians in this cultural immersion represents not only a reconciliation, but an opportunity to expand horizons.
