Umar Nurmagomedov never lost. That was the mantra that accompanied the name of the Russian, whose invincibility was treated almost as a certainty that the bantamweight belt (up to 61,2 kg) was within his reach. But the scenario changed in UFC 311, when Merab Dvalishvili entered the octagon and, with an impeccable tactical game, did the impossible: he gave the young man his first defeat as a professional.
Shortly after his victory over Renato Moicano in the main fight of the night, Islam makhachev, Umar's friend and training partner, commented on the young man's setback. Instead of focusing on the defeat, the current lightweight champion (up to 70,3 kg.) saw the situation from a much broader and, perhaps, more hopeful perspective.

“It wasn’t Umar’s day. He’s young, he made mistakes, but that’s part of the process. He still has a lot to learn. He didn’t leave the Octagon with any serious injuries, and that’s a positive thing. He showed quality, even in defeat,” Makhachev said.
The most interesting thing about Makhachev's speech, however, was not just his consolation to his friend, but his pragmatic view of the future. The learning moment, according to Islam, is as important as any victory.
“He was not 100% prepared for this fight, but he accepted the opportunity, and that shows his courage. He will learn from this experience. And with time, he will become stronger. I know that for sure. Some days we win, some days we lose. Everything comes from God,” Islam said.
Umar Nurmagomedov, 29, has a record of 18 wins and one loss. The Russian, who lost for the first time in his career, also had his left hand broken and showed the swelling on social media.
