As the world prepared to watch Arman Tsarukyan as a challenger for the lightweight belt (up to 70,3 kg) in the main fight of the UFC 311, the Armenian injured his back and ended up being replaced at the last minute. Islam makhachev, who had nothing to do with it, entered the octagon as if it were just another day at work and finished Renato Moicano in the first round. The Dagestani's feat made Dana White change his opinion about who is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the Ultimate, something that, for Tom aspinall, it's funny.

In a video posted on his YouTube channel, Aspinall highlighted that, although he doesn't give much importance to the concept of pound-for-pound rankings, considering it something 'made up', he found it curious that Dana White changed his mind, starting to consider the lightweight champion number one instead of Jon Jones.

“Now we’re seeing Dana White saying that Islam is number one pound for pound in the world. As we all know, to me, pound for pound is a very made-up thing. I don’t take it very seriously. But it’s funny that he’s kind of switched sides now, from Jon Jones to Makhachev.”

Aspinall reveals he is a fan of Islam Makhachev and praises his performance and dominance in the lightweight division

Regardless of whether or not Makhachev has managed to convince anyone else that he is the best fighter in the sport today, Aspinall praised the Dagestani for fulfilling his role as champion by facing and beating whoever the UFC has put against him. The Brit noted that Islam is head and shoulders above the others in the division and has the potential to dominate as champion for a long time.

“Islam did what was expected of him: he went out there, he fought whoever they put in front of him, which is what a champion should do. He fought the guy the UFC told him to fight, he won, and he is so many levels above anyone else in this division. He will hold the belt for a long, long time, and that is something that makes me very excited because I am a big fan of Islam makhachev. "
