Makhachev snubs Moicano and downplays the greatness of his victory over the Brazilian at UFC 311

Lightweight champion preaches respect for last challenger, but doesn't miss an opportunity to provoke after quick triumph in the octagon

Determined to live up to his status as the Ultimate's number one pound-for-pound fighter, Islam makhachev explained the reason for seeking a quick and clean triumph over Renato Moicano No. UFC 311. Despite preaching respect for the challenger, the Russian did not miss an opportunity to provoke and declared that he could not have a close fight against the current 10th placed in the lightweight rankings (up to 70,3 kg).

“We don’t have to be friends, but I respect him and he needs to be grateful because I gave him a great opportunity for the title. I can’t fight a 10th ranked fighter and have a close fight or accumulate damage, so I’m the best fighter in the world and I finished him in the first round,” Makhachev said at a press conference after his victory in the UFC 311.

Makhachev, the new record holder for most belt defenses in the category, has been riding high on some great victories throughout his career in the UFC. Also in a press conference, the fighter stated that his biggest goal is to win a second belt (welterweight, up to 77,1 kg) in the organization, so that he can finally hang up his gloves in peace with himself.

On the other hand, Moicano appeared dejected after the defeat and stated that he is not sure if he will get another opportunity for the belt in the near future.
