Ankalaev and Cutelaba had faced each other for the first time in February 2020, in a duel that ended controversially. In the first fight between light heavyweights, Magomed emerged victorious by technical knockout after the referee judged that his rival was knocked out standing up. The controversial decision quickly proved to be wrong, as the Moldovan athlete was visibly in perfect condition and only pretending to have been shaken by his rival's blows. Faced with so much controversy, the UFC decided to reschedule the clash.

The rematch was delayed due to the new coronavirus pandemic, but it was made official for the UFC 254, which took place in October 2020. In the second clash, Ankalaev didn't want any more controversy and knocked him out again, this time, with no room for discussion.

Magomed Ankalayev e Jan Blachowicz will be the main fight of the UFC 282, which will take place next Saturday. The duel will be valid for the light heavyweight belt, which became vacant after Jiri Prochazka suffer serious injury and give up the title.
