Ankalaev and Cutelaba had faced each other for the first time in February 2020, in a duel that ended controversially. In the first fight between light heavyweights, Magomed emerged victorious by technical knockout after the referee judged that his rival was knocked out standing up. The controversial decision quickly proved to be wrong, as the Moldovan athlete was visibly in perfect condition and only pretending to have been shaken by his rival's blows. Faced with so much controversy, the UFC decided to reschedule the clash.
