Considered one of the great names in the history of world boxing, Oscar De La Hoya almost faced the former UFC fighter Vitor belfort, in September last year. Hospitalized at the time after contracting Covid-19, the North American had to be removed from the fight and, in an interview with 'MMA Fighting', the legend of the noble art admitted to feeling relieved at not having shared the ring with the 'Phenomenon'.

“I'm glad I didn't face this monster of a fighter because he's a big guy and he knows what he's doing. He is talented. Even though we're old, we can still throw punches. We saw that with Evander Holyfield, where he knocked him out. I think I got away with a good one. Everything happens for a reason. I'm glad I didn't fight because obviously he's a big guy and he knocked out Evander Holyfield. Thank goodness I got over COVID-19 and didn’t fight, and now I can just sit back, relax and grow some gray hairs by promoting fighters,” said De La Hoya.
Due to Oscar De La Hoya's hospitalization, Belfort had his opponent changed and faced fellow legend of the noble art Evander Holyfield. On September 11, 2021, the two athletes entered the ring at the 'Thriller' event and, at 59 years of age, the North American was easy prey for the former UFC champion and was knocked out before the second minute of the first round.
