Once best friends and training partners, the welterweights (up to 77 kg) have become extreme rivals and face each other in the main fight of the night.

After a heated press conference, with insults and provocations from both sides and a record number of security guards, Covington and Masvidal had their first official confrontation before the fight. Just like the press conference, the encounter was nervous and the presence of security guards was essential to keep the athletes at a distance and prevent things from getting out of control.
